On the morning of the 6 May 1682 in unremarkable weather the Gloucester a 50-gun frigate of the Royal Navy collided with a sandbank off the Norfolk coast. The shipwreck in international waters 28 miles 45km out to sea was discovered by divers in 2007 but only revealed in June 2022 for security reasons. HMS Gloucester 1909 was a Town-class light cruiser in service from 1909 to 1921.

Claire Jowitt has said that this can be claimed as the single most significant historic maritime discovery since. Lieutenant Commander Roger Anthony Heap and Surgeon Lieutenant Hugh Singer were the only survivors from fifty-one officers and midshipmen on board Gloucester. From HMS Gloucesters total company of 807 men only eighty-five survived the sinking of the ship and the subsequent twenty-four hour ordeal in the water.
